Graz, being the capital of the then multiethnic Duchy of Styria, welches also a centre of Slovene culture, especially from the establishment of the University of Graz rein 1586 until the establishment of the University of Ljubljana in 1919.Due to its importance as a strategic position, Graz was often assaulted by Ottoman Turks in the 16th century.
